It’s incredibly easy to go into a dark room and look at some numbers. But, unless you’re willing to go right to the frontline and see what goes on, you not only risk your data being discredited and dismissed as inaccurate, you lack the opportunity to get a full picture of everything that is going on.
It is incredibly important to complement data analysis with going right to the heart of where care is taking place. It’s crucial to undertake analysis of the processes and systems at the frontline (or lack of) that ultimately drive behaviour.
This is opposed to complicating analyses, risking the potential for falling into serious “analysis paralysis” by using some software that takes forever to learn. It would actually be wise to involve staff in the process which can be incredibly refreshing and rather enjoyable, collecting the various bits of information and individual processes and sticking them onto a wall and inviting staff to comment, critique, and evaluate their own way of working.
When analyses are done with the right supervision, guidance and parameters, real progress can be made to drive improvements that are sustainable and bought into by all relevant staff.
I have done this personally with so many clients and the results are incredible. Staff feel empowered and listened to, whilst giving me the opportunity to develop an accurate picture behind the numbers and tell a compelling story based on facts, figures, and actual proof.
